SUSTAINABILITY

CGB Sustainability Statement

As a company that connects America’s heartland with global markets, we value a strong commitment to sustainability by implementing and promoting safe, environmentally and socially responsible practices through three categories: people, environment, and community.

Environment.

We utilize infrastructure to minimize energy and resource use. With a large number of assets strategically located on our nation’s inland waterways, CGB leverages inland water transportation, a cost effective and incredibly eco-friendly option to move goods from the Midwest to the Gulf for export. A typical inland barge has a capacity of 15 times greater than one rail car, and 60 times greater than one semi-trailer truck. One 15 barge-tow can move the equivalent of 216 rail cars or 1,050 semi-trailer trucks. Click here to learn more about the advantages of waterway transportation.

In addition to barge, we utilize rail at many facilities for an economical means of transportation for goods. Moving freight by rail instead of by truck lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 75%. Click here to learn more about advantages of rail transportation.

Community.

We are committed to enhancing the communities in which we live and work by building mutually beneficial partnerships within to support the area’s needs, often addressing regional and even nationwide priorities. We are proud members of several national organizations that strive to promote sustainability, and will continue to serve in those roles to create opportunities within our communities that outlive our expectations.

One of the teams we proudly sponsor is Living Lands and Waters, an environmental organization dedicated to river clean-up and other key conservation efforts. The group, established by Chad Pregracke in 1998, spends 9 months a year living and traveling on a barge, hosting clean-up initiatives and workshops. We are proud to collaborate with our nation’s producers who are among one of the largest and most sustainable industries in the world, agriculture! Through their practices of land management, soil and water conservation, and effective use of applications, farmers promote farm preservation and future generational succession.

We encourage our producers and end-users to adopt sustainable like-minded strategies for their business practices and we are proud to promote those methods which sustain the economic viability of farm operations and enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole.

A combination of all of these efforts ensures that our commitments, priorities and day-to-day operations have sustainable and profitable results that will secure our company for generations to come.
